SPEAKER: Mr. Robert Hauser, Senior Analyst ESG Solutions, Zürcher Kantonalbank

Mr. Hauser discussed the reasons for the growing water stress which lie primarily in the increasing water consumption due to population and prosperity growth and significantly more people than the current 2.5 billion people will be affected by 2050.

Adapting water infrastructures to water availability and decoupling water demand from economic growth will be a major challenge in the 21st century.

The Lui Seng Chun Building is a Grade I historical buildings built in 1931 and was donated to the Hong Kong Government by the Lui family in 2000.

The Lui Seng Chun building was included in Batch I of the "Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme" initiated by the Government in 2008 and, after a bidding process, Hong Kong Baptist University was selected to conserve the building and convert it into a Chinese medicine healthcare centre.

The revitalisation work was completed in early 2012 and the clinic, Hong Kong Baptist University School of Chinese Medicine – Lui Seng Chun, commenced operations in April 2012

The guided tour was organised by the Baptisit University. Not only did we have the opportunity to visit the 1st, 2nd, 3rd floors as well as the herbal roof garden, we were allowed to enter the pharmacy room filled with Chinese herbal cabinets. It was fascinating to see all the different ingredients including dried plants and roots, dried orange peels, dried insect parts...etc etc

We were thankful to have Dr. Chow giving us a brief introduction on Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Q&A session was one of the highlights as we were all eager to participate with questions concerning well-being and health. This session is normally not included in the guided tour.

It was an interesting tour visiting a revitalised antique building as well as learning more of the TCM.

It was a hot Summer afternoon on the last day of June as our participants arrived at the LRC around 4pm. As they socialised with each other, a wide selection of drinks such as red/white wines, beer, soft drinks, orange juice and mineral water was served. Hot and cold canapés were available in buffet style.

The 70 Years History of the SAHK presentation started at 4.30pm. It took us back to June 30th 1948, when the Swiss Association was founded exactly 70 years ago. All the significant moments after 1948 were presented including some old documents, photos and video clips.

The Swiss Association of Hong Kong was founded three years after the war ended. It was still a very difficult period in Hong Kong as the different business sectors struggled to rebuild from scratch. Many businessmen including the Swiss had financial difficulties. The founders of the Swiss Association of Hong Kong took a leadership role to help the Swiss community and hence the foundation of the SAHK, a nonprofit organisation.

Since the foundation there have been many people who contributed and supported the Swiss Association of Hong Kong either as committee members, members, volunteers or sponsors.

We had the great pleasure of having some of the past presidents and committee members joined this event and in total 30 of us together.

A big thank you to all who helped and supported this special event, including:

    1. Our sponsor, The Swiss Bank of Geneva, with their kind support.

    2. Kurt for hosting us at the LRC and the LRC event and banquet teams.

    3. The SAHK history contents contributors.

    4. Our volunteer photographer.

    5. All the participants who were at the event.

The ripples created by the founders of the Swiss Association of Hong Kong will continue for many more years to come.

Happy 70th anniversary to the Swiss Association of Hong Kong!

BOSSHARD IN CHINA: Documenting social change in the 1930s -  9th June 2018
Exhibition of Swiss Magnum Photographer Walter Bosshard -
guided tour by Dr. Florian Knothe, Director of the University Museum & Art Gallery of HKU

    Barbara Hemmi Verburg

Again about 25 members joined for a Saturday morning Art-Tour, this time of the exhibition of Swiss photographer Walter Bosshard, who has lived and traveled in China from 1933 to 1939.

Bosshard was one of the earliest journalists to record this critical decade in Chinese and world history. Apart from daily life, Bosshard also photographed and interviewed key political figures, including Mao Zedong.

Bosshard was a pioneer in the field of photojournalism, mastering both the word but also the photographic eye. Today his photographs are a rich source of information for understanding global history.

We all enjoyed the excellent tour by Florian Knothe, which gave us many insights and led to interesting discussions.
